Question ring & pinion help

My rear end is a ford 8.8. I need to know how the gears should mesh together. Is there supposed to be a little play between the two gears or what? I know how to adjust it and everything, i just need to know whats acceptable. Help!

You need a small amount of backlash. The gears heat up when you drive and they expand, so they need room for expansion. The backlash should be between 11-16 thousands and 77 ft-lbs on the bearing cap bolts. I don't have a dial indicator so I setup the rear end and go by feel. Hold the pinion gear and try and move the ring gear. It should move back and forth slighty, maybe 1/16th of an inch. Once I feel that it's close, I roll a tooth pattern to check it. It's really not that bad, just gotta make sure the tooth pattern is good.
