What did you guys drive before you bought an Excursion? If it was another Excursion, what did you drive before Excursions cam into existence? Just curious.
I drove a 1998 Chevy Suburban 4x4 with the 350. Lots of problems over the life of the vehicle. Had both engine and transmission problems when I traded it in on our 2002 Excursion 4x4 PSD Limited. We have never looked back. We will be forced to move into a Ford SD Crew Cab 4x4 after the Excursion wears out in many years.

I drove a 1989 Full-size Chevy G20, Customized van. I bought the thing new and it lasted me until I bought my X in 2001. The main problems with the engine were the usual with any chevy: alternators, starters, batteries, and a few other minor things. In 2000 things problems started adding up and my gas mileage was dropping. I got sick of it all and layed my eyes on an X . I haven't looked back since!
I'm trying to talk my wife into buying an X, assuming they will still be produced, in a few years. We plan on starting a family and have 2 big dogs (greyhounds) and we would be able to transport the whole crew in comfort and still be able to tow a trailer. Of course I'll keep my truck though!
The X will be my second vehicle. It is on order. I currently have a 2001 Navigator.
The 'gator is a nice vehicle, but I find it at times... small. It's rated for 8500 lbs of tow, but a 7000 lb trailer really pushes the 'gator all over the place.
Believe-it-or-not, I'm moving to the 'X to get better fuel milage. Moreover, better $/km. I've ordered the 6.0 PSD 'X. Putting premium gas in the 'gator get's old after three years.
I also don't like the new 'gators. All that fake-brushed-metal is ugly. Putting the shifter on the floor is a huge waste of space. If the transmission was even a little fancy (ie: you might touch the shifter during normal driving), there'd be an excuse for this, but the transmission is still a dead-standard ford.
That and I don't like the things that break on the 'gator. I just paid $600 to fix the air suspension and the tranny was replaced under warrenty at 70k. I rented a 'gator before purchasing and the rental had the same transmission problem. On reading the forums, I find it's a common flaw.
So... the 'X it is. It's hard to wait for a new toy.
I traded a 1988 Jeep cherokee (small version) on my 2001 X v10. It's extra room is great. I have 3 kids. Vacations will be more comfortable with the extra space. Getting around parking spaces in town is the drawback. I like the backup sensor and use them to back in spaces rather than pull in. MPG is a little less.10-11 in town 14-15 on highway....the jeep didn't do much better. I still have my 1978 reg. cab and crew cab 4x4's.
I had a 99 Yukon. Didn't tow very well. Traded it for a 2001 Suburban 2500 with the 8.1L. Towed great.... when it wasn't in the shop. Traded it for my Ex.
