i bought my first truck when i was 14, 74 f250 with a 390, i rebuilt my first FE when i was about 11 or 12, i helped dad out on it and ever sense then ive loved the FE, ive rebuilt and played with about 10-12 different FE's in my life, i have a lot of life left so ill become old and grey working on FE's.
Also 22 here, and I've had my FE truck since bout November of 2002. Free is a great price, although I think I'd rather have my grandfather himself back than his pickup. Started working on my 360 when I broke a pushrod and decided there wasn't enough oil gettin to the heads, roundabout a year ago now. This week I'm pickin up another...a '72 F150 4x4 with a 390, a good bed so I'll be using it on my '69
i got my FE truck about 4 years ago. when we got it there was no air filter on it and it ran like crap with gas supurting out of the carb. til we rebuilt the carb. i plan to rebuild it as soon as i can afford it. our best junkyard find i think was a 66 bench seat that was in pefrect condition for 15 bucks.

I bought my '69 back in 1988. It was just a 360 truck. I was going to put a stout 351 Cleveland in it, but got a deal on trading for a 428 CJ motor, dual fours, four spd. The deal was done, and been a FE fanatic since. Got four of them now(FE's).
(2) 428's, (1) 390, and (1) 352.

i traded my 88 GT for my 69 shortbed ranger 360 truck. 390 shortblck done, now working on top half. took three spd out and replaced w/ 4spd. i love it. hope to get it painted after motor gets done. better get it done before 8 months 'cause im having new addition to family. ha ha.
I've had FE's for 18 years, been working with them for 22 years.
The first one I helped my sister's x hubby build. I was pretty impressed with under .010" wear on the crank in a farm truck, F350, with 250k miles of abuse on it.
His (sis's X) truck had a 410 in it. I built a 390 for my dad's 65 F100 when I was 17.
My first one, 69 F100, I picked up when I was 19. Traded a 70 Galaxie XL for it, and drove it from WA to NJ two days later.
I've had 3 other's since. In: 69 F250 Highboy (390), 66 F100 (352 swapped to a 390), and currently a 72 F100 with a 390. Plus one sitting on the garage floor that I'm getting parts for to build for my little brothers truck. I'll be taking his old one and building a new one for me.

20 here and I'm on my first FE.
Bought a 1973 F-250 from a guy who swore it was a 390. The truck is a Single cab long bed, manual steering 4x4, D44 closed knuckle, D60 rear w/4.56 in both, Np435 and NP205. The truck ran great off the line and would even out accelarate my 99 F-150 4x4 with a 5.4 all the way to 50mph However the 73's top speed was at 60 while doing 3500rpm . The truck had so much torque, I've never been able to stall the engine. Hell, I learned how to drive a stick for the first time when i drove it from the previous owner's house.
2 months after purchase and after spending close to $500 in tune up parts, it developed a loud lifter tap one day while hitting a speed bump. Turned out it was 2 quarts too low....after an oil change i did less than 100 miles before. It hadnt smoked or leaked and im sure I put a full 6 quarts when i changed the oil. After that, i drove it another 40 miles to its current resting spot so i could tear down that engine. Upon disassembly, I discovered a few things. Turns out it was not a 390, but a 360 bored .03 over instead. the cylinders 2-3-6-7 were gunked up with oil. intake lifter on the #5 cylinder had some pitting and the entire cam looked like a dog had chewed on it, it was pitted so badly on all lobes. The block had no oiling modifications and the pilot bearing/bushing was siezed and oval shaped (could this possibly be the cause of vibration when accelerating after the clutch pedal is released? I replaced all U-joints and the drive line angle is stock). I also saw that the main bearings on the crank had a bit of a red-orange tint to them, could this mean the engine was overheated at some time? or would they be blue?
So its down to the bare block right now, i just did the Oiling modifications the other day and now im looking for a 390 crank, Rods and pistons so i can start putting it back together soon before it gets too hot to work outside. This is my first FE but it definetly wont be my last. If it had that much power on four cylinders with poor compression, worn stock cam, bad timing chain, stock 2bbl carb, intake manifold, and exhuast manifolds. I cant wait to see what that baby's got after im finished!
