I am experiencing a leak in the rear window. You can see several places where the seal fails and water runs down the inside of the glass (not just at the hinge locations).
I have been to the dealer twice on this: 1st they tried to lubricate the weatherstripping which didn't help 2nd they replaced the weatherstripping with a brand new one which leaks worse than the original
I think that this may be a design flaw since I've also noticed this on an '02 Explorer at work.
If anyone has a solution, or anyone's dealer found a solution, please let me know. I am prepared to give my dealer one more shot before I contact Ford directly.
Alright, maybe I shoulda bought a lot of other trucks, but my point is this is shaping up to be my last American truck. I'm shelling out too much money for a truck that leaks when it rains, needs the rear axle replaced, has a mysterious rattle in the dash, all this for only $32,000+ , and it's not even a year old with only 11k miles on it. I'm kinda worried about hanging onto this truck too long.
Just a little more info on the leak, I went to the dealer again, they state that it only leaks when they spray a hose directly onto the seal. So I've been trying to pay better attention to when it occurs. It appears to happen when driving in the rain, when I wash the truck (by hand only) it holds. If you look at the seal it appears to have several points where it just doesn't seal well especially near the driver's side hinge.
If anyone has any advice or had a similar problem fixed please let me know.
I too work hard to make a living and I would prefer to not have to spend the precious little time that I have off in the dealership service department's waiting room.
This may or may not help. I had a small amount of water that dripped down the inside of the right rear window on my 98xlt (from top to bottom) which I noticed when washing the car or when it rained, not long after acquiring the vehicle new. After a good deal of studying the problem, I discovered a pinhole in a weld on the top of the car, at the end of the rain channel. A drop of auto paint on the spot sealed the problem.

Thanks for trying, but I looked over the areaseveral times this weekas it has been raining. I can't find any pinholes in the roofline, and this leak distributes water in about 8 places across the rear window, it is at its worst on the drivers side to the outside of the hinge ( a lot of water runs between the weather stripping and the rear window defroster cable that runs up the side of the glass). The more I look at it I think the hatch is misaligned as there is more of a gap between glass and taillights on the driver's side than on the passenger, this probably has something to do with it.
I guess I'll have to point this out to the dealer, since the 3 times I've already had them check they've never noticed this.
I remember seeing info somewhere on Ford having problems with the rear hatches warping, if anyone knows where I can find this info please let me know, maybe that's the problem.
Do the old dollar bill trick. Close the hatch on the bill all along the weatherstripping.
If you find an area there's no or little resistance, you have it.
