Vent Window mod

Has anyone attempted or discussed modding the std fixed rear windows to vent windows??

I would like to do it, but Im sure the cost will be through the roof. I'm thinking I need the following.

2 rocker switches
2 actuators
2 sets of hinges
maybe new windows if different from std fixed windows.

Probably won't be practical but I'm interested in information, the wife's van has them and we do like them.

Thanks

Probably not practical, those windows are very expensive to start with.

Yeah, I just saw another post where they were 740.00 each. But if I had a donor, then what else would I need that I haven't foreseen yet?

If you had a donor for the windows, take the motors as well as the upper console that the stock switches are in. Then all you would have to do is wire them in. Come to think if you have a donor then you will also need the rubber that goes around the pinchweld to seal when closed. Other than that it should be a matter of cutting them out and putting in the new ones. You might even be lucky and have a wiring harness up under your console. Good luck, because I don't even think you could get a decent price from the wreckers for used ones, unless of course you know someone, because they usually go by set prices.

Maybe you could make the ones you have open manually with some of the option parts.

That maybe possible, but if I go that far then I will probably just do it all. But we shall see.

No it won't work that way. The stationary one is glued in. The opener has the hinges epoxied to the glass, and then bolted on. Some of the interior trim will need to come off to get at unbolting the used one and then bolting in the new vehicle. The holes will be there already. The stationary one will have to be cut out from the inside, and then you will have to remove, clean the remaining urathane from the body so the gasket of the opener will fit on. Not to difficult, and will take more time running wires to the new motors than mounting.

If, and when you get the parts you could probably get a glass shop to remove your solid vent and bolt on the opener. Then all you would need to do is wire in.

So I guess there is holes in the glass on the opening ones and they can't be drilled into a non-opening tempered one, is that it?

Well the opening one will have one hole in it where the motor arm attatches to it, and yes it is already tempered so no drilling into it. The other side has the hinge glued on, and the hinge is then bolted to the body.

I haven't actually worked on the ones on the X and hope never to because that would mean it would be mine and I don't want to have mine busted out. Done lots of the other suv and mini vans and most are a pain to get the interior trim off to get to the bolts. Most of the newer stationary vents are now bolted on as well as glued, so the X might be the same. Hard to tell with out having actually seen one that is fixed, cuz mine are openers.

It would be nice if they made a sliding side glass for the Excursion.
Humm.... never even thought to look into one until I saw this.

I guess I didn't know this. I thought that ALL Excursions came with the electric rear venting windows.

Mine stuck a lot until I put something on the rubber. I think it was just a thin coat of ATF.

So, it sounds like the best way to go about doing this is to find a donor.
That way the windows already have the hinges epoxied on and the actuator attached to the opening side

Right, if you can find one. A wrecking yard sould have some unless they have all already been robbed.

yep, but for some reason I don't think it will be cheap. The price that most wreckers charge is fenominal, to say the least and your starting off with pricey windows.
