Ignition Module Bad?

Since my truck just failed me and is sitting on the side of the road waiting for the sunrise, I thought I'd ask about my ignition module. If you can get to my gallery there are some photos. One of them is of the ignition module. In the top center of the photo you can see some kind of black goo running down the wheel well from the ignition module. What the heck is that? I think it may be the guts of the module that got real hot and melted. Truck still starts and runs (most of the time) but it runs rough, then perfect then rough again. You never can really know when it will be perfect.

I don't know whether I have the Duraspark 2 or 3 either. Does that make a difference and would you replace it with the same or another after market brand?

The problem this morning will most likely be the float is stuck in the carb (I hope). Just got to tap it a little. Maybe the fuel inlet baffle is binding the float.
Thanks for the input.

the duraspark 2 dizzy has a vac canister mounted on it while the DS3 does not. do you have a square coil or a round one? round coil for the duraspark ignition and the square coil for the TFI ignition which has a rectangle module mounted to the dizzy.

Round. I found out that the duraspark 2 is in my truck, the three is reserved for trucks with an ECC.

I still find the black goo kinda scary. You think it's guts are leaking out?

Yep! I've never torn into one of these, but have enough electronics background to tell you if it's got goo leaking out it's either history or
REAL close. Don't know if it's what caused your truck to quit, but very
likely, and if it's melted down I'd swap it anyway, or you'll be walking a second time very soon.

Put the goo back in...oozing modules are a bad thing! Seriously, the "goo" is there to stabilize and support the electronics inside. Leaking or oozing denotes an overheat condition within the module, and steer clear of the cheap aftermarket junk units. Make sure the wiring is in good shape going to the stator (pickup inside distributor), shorts there or inside wher the advance plate moves them is also bad for module voltages.

Yep, I'll be hunting down a module today. Hopefully I can get by until Saturday and can do the job then. Nice thing about it is the location of the module. Should be able to change it out in a few minutes.

BTW, was anyone able to get to my pics in my gallery? I'm not sure if they are accessable to everyone.

Let us know how your module project works out.

No, I couldn't see any pictures in your gallery.
