hey everyone im just looking for some opinions. i have a 74' ford f-100 and im looking to do a little bit of motor work. i currently have a 302 backed with a 3spd colmn shifter. ive been thinking about finding a parts truck and dropping in a 460 and a C6 in it. ive been going back and forth on this for 2 months now. IM TIRED OF DRIVING A 4 BANGER!!!!!!!! lately ive been thinking of just doing a little motor work to my 302 to keep the gas mileage and putting a 5spd tranny on it. all opinions are accepted!!!! thanks!
What's your budget? And is this your daily driver, do you use it to tow very often? If you have a lower budget and don't use the truck to tow very often I would beef the 302 up with an edelbrock carb, intake, and CAM along with some headers. This combo will cost less than a grand if you install it yourself and will easily match a stock 460's horsepower but it will be at a higher rpm and still won't have the 460's tremendous low-end torque required for towing and heavy hauling. Basically are you looking for cheap speed or a good working horse.
i have a budget of about 2-3500 $$ i wont b towing a sport truck. the carb, manifold, cam,+ headers were exactly what i was thinking. you really think that will match a 460s hp that thing has like 400 hp what about a tranny?
Beef up the 302. You might want to entertain the idea of converting the 3 on the tree to a hurst floor shifter. Make sure you buy the high performance version, it will take a much harder beating. This conversion made my 66 F100 I6 fun to drive.
You can work the 302 to produce good numbers. Just remember its not a mustang so look for mods that will help out in the torque dept. You could run a tremec 5speed, but there goes almost your whole budget with tranny, bellhousing, clutch, shifter, driveshaft, etc..., a t5 will work, but as stated they are not the strongest, even a world class t5 won't last long in a light mustang with some mods on it. If you don't drive hard go for it, but if you race it and start bangin gears plan on picking up pices of the t5 on the road.
The T-5 shifter may also be positioned back farther than a "truck" manual transmission. You would want to measure from bellhousing/block mating surface to shifter to make sure.
i plan on puttin a limited silp diff in the rear and doing an axle flip kit. in the front i plan on putting some 3inch dropped ibeams on it. What ,exact ,tranny should i go with? is there a four speed manual that will handle a beating? i dont plan on doing any towing with it but i still am gonna put some more bottom end life into that 302
