I am looking to replace a 1992 7.3 naturally aspirated engine in my pickup. the dealer said there are several crankshafts and I would have a problem getting one from a salvage yard.
Is this true or is he looking to get more money from me by buying his engine??
Also, could I just replace the 92 with a 93-94 factory turbocharged engine??
I have a zf 5 speed trans to go behind it.

Hi,

why do you want a crank from a junkyard, isn't it possible to refresh yours with grinding made by a maschine shop?

All of the 6.9/7.3L IDI engines use the same crankshaft -- even the turbocharged engines.

thanks.
appreciate the info. I thot the dealer was kind of full of the brown stuff. I am looking to replace the whole engine, it made a noise just before the rod went thru it. Any ideas where to find one?
would a factory turbo engine be better than naturally aspirated and installing aftermarket turbo?

There are differences between the NA and Turbo engines. I don't know all the differences but what I am aware of valve seats, valves, pistons and rods. They are built to handle the heat and stress better. There are several good engine suppliers around. Jasper Engines and Dealers Diesel are two of them. Jasper is higher than Dealers, but this is not to say that Dealers isn't any good. I have had good luck with Jasper on gas engines in the past, and I currently have a Dealers Diesel reman long block in the Enterprise. DAS (Diesel Auto Services) out of Canada is supposed to have pretty good rep, according to customers of theirs. They seem to be priced right, then take in to account exchange rate on top of that. I was not aware of them when I was purchasing a long block after I dropped a valve.
I purchased from A two Z engines out of Flowery Branch, Ga. for $4175 including core on a 7.3 NA IDI. a little over a year ago. No problems so far (40k miles after install).
