Hello i am looking for 3/4 ton fords used and I am having a hard time findiing one. Today in my search i came along a 1997 f250 standard duty and am having a hard time finding info about this model any help would be great thanks.
Prior to the current super duty trucks (1999+) there were both an F250 light duty and an F250 heavy duty. The light duty is more like the current F150 with the 7700 GVWR package. In 1998 there was an F250 light duty but no F250 heavy duty or F350 trucks were produced.
ok couple more questions does this truck have a heavier frame than an f150 and larger brakes or are all these things the same. I have a 1990 f150 heavy duty and don't want to buy the same thing i already have thanks .
Ford made the F250LD from 1997 to 2000. In 2001, the 250LD was dropped for the 2001 F150-7700 lbs package. The 7700's were made from 2001-2003. Same thing as a 250LD. The 250LD and 7700's are of the 1997-2003 F150 (2004 heritage) body style. The frames are the same except that the 250LD/7700 has 7 crossmember instead of 5 on the F150. (For reg cabs) The 250LD/7700 also has a 7-lug (7 on 150mm bolt circle) Sterling 10.25" SEMI-FLOATING axle. (Basically a 7-lug version of the Sterling that was used on 1980-1996 F250LD) It's a bit more difficult finding after-market wheels for them although Weld has some nice ones for the 250LD and 7700's. These 7-lug 10.25" Sterlings are/were available with a 3.73 or 4.10 ratio both Limited Slip and open diff. I think the brakes are about 1" diameter more on the 250LD/7700's than on the F150's, if I recall, and all wheel disc brakes from 1999 - on, although they might have been 4-disc in 97, I don't rmemeber. The springs are also a little stiffer. The 1998-2000 250LD's could have a 4.6L/manual, 4.6L auto or a 5.4L auto. The 2001-2003 7700's are only available with the 5.4L auto. If you wanted a heavy duty truck in 1998 (as I did) you could buy a left-over 1997 HD or the early 1999 Super Duties were available from end of April 98. The dealer told met that unsold (not sent to dealers) and overlapping manufacture with the SD Model Year 97HD's were sent to Canada and Mexico/Central America/South America and rebadged as 1998 HD models. The 1997HD's have a 10.25 FULL FLOATING Sterling axle and are of the 1980-1996 body style. They were available with 3.55 or 4.10 ratios with the 351W, 460, and 7.3L diesel with either the E4OD 4-speed auto or a ZF547 5-speed manual. The 1996 and prior 250LD's were semi-floating 8-lug with 300 I6 or 302 V8. I would have rather had a 1997HD or 1999 SD instead of the 1997 LD, in fact, I did buy a 1999 SD. The SD's interior is about the same size as the old 97HD body style (Same as my 94) and you get 8-lug 10.5" full-floater axle along with the ZF S547 5-speed/5.4L V8 (in my 99SD or S6-650 6-speed in my 2003) that I could not get in the 97LD.
