Intake and exhaust. Those are the 2 basic starting blocks for mileage. How you go about modifying them is all up to you. Tire size and gearing can also play a role. There's actually a lot you CAN do to improve your mileage. It depends on what you use the truck for and what the truck is that will determine how far you can go modifying stuff.
I'm thinking about doing electric fans. That should net 1 or 2 mpg plus give me more horsies. But, it is not recommended if you tow a lot. I haven't towed anything, yet. I know, I know.... A SD that hasn't towed something? Egad and Gadzooks. Don't worry, if this year goes well, there will be a trailer with a new snowmobile on it in the near future.
But considering it's a '97, you might want to do a major tune up. Make sure everything is running up to snuff and go from there. Good luck and welcome to
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jul-02 AT 09:12 PM (EST)]If your truck has the 4.10 ratio axle it will use a fair amount of fuel, especially if you have the 460.Of course it will tow and haul heavy loads easier with this ratio.A 460 equipped truck with the 3.55 axle will do no worse in fuel mileage than a 351 equipped truck with the 4.10 axle.
Other than taller gearing, intake and exhast mods.mentioned previously there isn't a whole lot you can do other than drive conservativley.
The 96 truck listed below in my signature recently rewarded me with 14.25 mpg.in hwy.driving on a recent trip from Cincinnati to Detroit and back.Other than running at 75mph.most of the time I managed to drive it easy when taking off and picking up speed. This truck gets between 12 and 13mpg.just driving it around and 10mpg.when towing as much as 6500lbs.at 65mph.in the eastern US mountain regions. The worst I have done towing is 9.5mpg.and this happened when I was running fast and climbed hills for all it was worth.
I hope this gives you somewhat of an idea of the mileage you can expect.
its a 97 F250 HD...i've got a 460 with the 4.10 ratio. i think in city traffic i've been getting about 9-10 mpg...and on highway, i get about 13 mpg. i was also wondering if anybody could suggest a good off road tire for my truck. thanx
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-02 AT 01:17 AM (EST)]id go fer a bf goodrich m/t fer an off road tire. and it sounds to me like its doin pretty good as far as gas mileage goes. our 94 one ton w/ 460 got at best 12-13 and that was on interstate. id go fer a good tune up and dual exhaust to try to improove mileage.

Your mileage sounds about right.
I don't know how agressive a tire or what size you want, but if you want a tire in the standard size and still want good road maners I would suggest you take a look at Michelin LTX AT tires. They aren't anything radical as far as off road goes but they do very well on the street for an all terain tire.
