Ford Power Products lists the industrial version of the 300(carbed, with just an alternator, flywheel and bellhousing attached) at 495 lbs dry.
I have no clue what an EFI weighs, but, it's definatley not more than a 351W
The 300 does weigh more than any smallblock ford and almost as much as a 460, but not quite. a 302 weighs 450-500 lbs depending on the casting and a 351W weighs in right at 525 lbs or so. A 460 comes in right at 640 lbs. A carbed 300 weighs in right around 590 lbs. It's all in the block. a 300 block weighs almost the same as a 460 block.
Why does Ford have different front coil springs for the twin ibeam suspension for V8 versus 6 cyl trucks? I mean, by those numbers, you should use lighter springs for a 302 than for a 300.
Or were the old 352, 360, 390 FE engines a whole lot heavier?
The weight listed for the 460 is incorrect. That was a short block without heads or manifolds.
The FEs weighed about 650.
I put a 429 in a station wagon that originally had a 400, and the springs bottomed out after about 2 years.
429 = 720
400 = 575
So there definitely were weight ranges for springs. The motor weight is critical, since it is positioned directly over the front springs, rather than balanced out over 4 like the passenger/payload weight.
