Ok I have a 1978 F150 4x4 it has a 351M in it and a c6 tranny... due to new inspection laws in our area I need to know what came on my truck from the factory, cats? pollution pumps? etc.... I was told that this stuff was not added untill 1979 on the 150's but on the 100's it was there in 75... If my truck didn't come with this stuff, how can I prove so??? Does anyone know anyway around this??? Any help would be so greatly appreciated, I love my truck, and always will, and I'll be damned if these new laws are going to keep me from driving it, so what ever I have to do I'm gonna....thanks all who reply
Hi Adam,
I'm from Pa. & require Emission on my truck, I have a 1978 F150 4x4 with the 351M, it has no pump, canister, cat, etc. It came from the factory like that, I had no proof, I was going by what the previous owner had told me (he was right). I just went last week and got my truck inspected, it passed emissions with no problem at all & passed the visual test also. I'm not sure how you can prove what your truck came with but I hope you have the LUCK I have had !!
FORDS ROCK
I'm sorry I'm not familiar with the term ur speaking of, DSO code?? is that the plate on the door jamb? I really apprieciate the replies guys, I love that u guys can find the time to help ppl. I too live in Pa in mercer county, and 4 diffent inspection stations give u 5 different answers... So frustrating
Yes Ford put all the pertinent info on what they call a Rating plate.
It changed appearance & data codes over the years.
On the 78 the rating plate will be riveted on the door end near the latch.
On the bottom right is will say: DSO.
Let me know the number for the code.
Ok I found the code, Mine is 14, This is the code for my truck, while ur checking this can u check my dad's truck as well, his code is 42 his truck applies to all the specs as mine as far as yr, drive train, etc. etc. only his is a lariat, trailer special. What exactly does this code mean? and by using this can I show the inspection station that my truck did not come equipped with the emission equipment? (if it didn't come equipped) I really appreciate the quick responses and input. Thanks
DSO 14 is Pittsburg. DSO 42 is Cleveland. So, 351M federal/auto, NOT an F100, 78 model year rules. 7-72. You should have a cold lockout PVS, and a vacuum reservoir hooked up to a venturi vacuum amplifier, connected to a load control valve and from there to the EGR. No bypass valve, so no air pump, and therefore no catalyst.
You may or may not have a purge valve/cannister. If you did, you should have steel line(s) from the gas tank(s) running on the inside of the passenger-side frame member and emerging at the bottom of the fender directly (more or less) under the starter solenoid.

I to just got my rig inspected. At first they would not inspect it because it had no cats on it.I told them it came from the factory the way you see it.The lead tech took a number of the truck and refrenced it to a code the state gave to them.He then came back out put a sticker on it and said see ya in a year.I also have a 351m.It came only with a pcv and egr valve. Both are still on and have no problem with inspections.
Thank u guys! This at least lets me have some hope. I love my truck, even though it's not driven regularly it's there when I need it and can always be counted on. These inspection laws really suck, a buddy of mine is into restoration of older vehicles. He is having similar problems with his 78 mustang cobra, for over the years it has lost stock parts such as cats, etc.. He also has a 92 dodge- dakota and he took the stock v6 out of it, and threw in a 1968 318 in it. And it's stupid cause what does a person do if this is the case?... lol I'm not expecting an answer for that question... my question has already been answered and I'm greatful for that... But it's just stupid that everyone has to be so **** about the few good vehicles left on the road.
My '78 F150 with 351m uses a decal on the door and the DSO # is, along with the other codes on the bottom row, blank. The engine has an emissions sticker on the driver's side valve cover, but the #'s have faded...
My question is; "which plants used the decal on the door and what would that make my calibration # out to be"? I've drove myself batty over this one, any info would make my day...
The only reason I mention the DSO code is to determione of the truck was originally shipped to California.
That's all
If not CA, then it more than likely falls under the National 49 state application
