I just purchased a 2001 F250 7.3 L with an automatic tranny. Yesterday after a hundred or so miles of relatively high speed (70-80 mph) highway driving (no towing), and exiting to slower street driving, the O/D off light began flashing and the vehicle labored heavily (almost red-lining) before shifting out of first from a stop. Power was pretty nonexistant. There was a loud clunk/blip at one point. Shifting into the other gears was OK. I was able to limp it the few miles home by almost taking it to the red line and taking my foot off the accelorator to "force" a shift (and coasting to avoid red lights!:~)
Checked all fluid levels to be OK. The lite is off now, but the shifting is still sluggish. It is at the local Ford dealer who has not yet called with the exact problem, but suggested expecting to pay the big $$$ for a new tranny.
Has anyone experienced this problem?
Has anyone installed a Brian's Truck Stop Tranny? If so what do they think of it?
Any other high performance trannys recommended?
I am guessing that if I have to install a new one I might as well go all out as this truck will be doing lots of heavy towing.
Ouch!!!!!!!! Just got the call from the dealer. Says tranny is shot. Doesn't recommend a high performance tranny...is that his job? And of course any performance mods I add would negate a new (Ford) tranny warranty....HELP!!
do not take it to the dealer for anything not under warranty. They are trained to milk as much $$ from you as possible. Shop around and find out who in your area is the best ate working on autos. cheaper and better in the long run
Thanks for that advice...I had a feeling that was the case after they told me that not only is the tranny is cooked, but the rear brakes are shot, plus the battery, tires, an exhaust and oil leak, and a host of little problems that even I can handle.
The exhaust leak is the only problem still under warranty.....I am considering installing a Banks Power Pack, so the $100 deductable can go that direction instead of to the dealer....any comments on that system?
You can usually get all the components seperately for a lot less money than going with any Banks package. Besides, they include a K&N filter which I won't run in my truck. Check out motorhaven, the store for this site. You can get most of the stuff there.
I have e'd both Brians Truck Shop and Suncoast Converters...I got too confused on diesel site!:~)
Have heard good words about Brian's...just a long way to have to tow my truck unless I can find someone local to install.
Then I have to figure out all the compatable components for upgrades....that's why I was looking at Banks...they seem to make it simple for idiots like myself....but from the chat, it doesn't sound as though they are as good as their advertising....don't know anyone who actually has these systems installed.
Are they just over priced? Too hard on the engine, or what? Any comments?
As for the K&N filter, the catalog states they include a Banks Ram-Air llifetime filter; is that the same or have they corrected the problem?
