I have noticed a lot of talk on this forum about the sound of flowmaster 50 series versus 40 series and so on. I just bought and installed a 50 series suv/performance to my stock exhaust. Everything is stock, I just chnaged the muffler. I was looking to get a little more noise from my exhaust, and I would have to say that's what I got.
At idle, you can barley hear it. When you take off, it sounds sweet until you reach overdrive - then (inside) you can't barley hear it. Now, my tires are really cupped, so I am sure they are masking some of the interior noise.
Overally, I like it - it is really a bit quieter than I thought it would be, but again, my tires are very loud. I have not been at highway speeds much, but I have not noticed much ressonance that people talk about - its about the same as stock.
I use a 50 series on my Explorer also. One thing you have to look at also is your cats. If your vehicle came with 4 cats (like my Explorer), then you still have a lot of dampening going through the pipe. Thats even before you get to the muffler. I rem, oved all 4 of my cats and replaced them with a 2-in-2out Catco - then added the 50 series behind it. A LOT less restrictive as stock exhaust. The noise is about the same as you are talking about - a low idle, but strong as you go through the gears.
My dad has one on his f-150 with the 5.4L I have noticed the sound getting a touch louder are the muffler gets more time on it. Almost stock at idle when we first installed it....now it has a low rumble at idle.........The trick is now to get the truck inspected in this state without having to change it.
4.04 (b): Procedures for Inspection of
Non-Commercial Motor Vehicles
(5) Muffler and exhaust System. Accelerate motor to test for prevention of unnecessary noise and emission of any unreasonable amount of smoke. The exhaust system, exhaust manifold(s), exhaust pipe(s), muffler(s), and tailpipe(s), if designed to be so equipped, shall be tight and free of leaks. System components shall be securely fastened with fasteners in place and undamaged. All motor vehicle exhaust systems shall discharge the exhaust beyond operator, passenger, and/or trunk compartment. Unnecessary noise is herein defined as any noise which is louder than that emitted by the vehicle when equipped with the original manufacturer's equipment. A gas or diesel vehicle will be rejected if, at normal operating temperature, at any constant speed over 15 MPH, (approximately 1,000 to 1,200 RPM's) visible black or blue exhaust emissions are evident.
I had a 50 Series Flowmaster installed last weekend. SI/DO with 18x3.5" stainless tips. Its exactly what I wanted as far as sound level. Not even noticeable at 65+ mph holding a constant speed.
Cobra, what's this 2 in 2 out Catco you're talking about?

wow. does that mean nobody in your area has any flowmasters on their trucks? that would really suck if you have an old mustang you want to cruise around in. i'd move to another state.

Catco makes catalytic converters. Very good product. The link shows some of the different ones you can get. The Catco I have is a 2-in-2-out cat. You could also run 2 cats instead, but for the price, the 2-in-2-out is nice. I don't think they make a dual in 3.5" pipe, so if you ever got one, you would probably be better getting 2 cats instead of downsizing the pipe on each end.
