I have a 2000 F250 PWD with about 100K miles on it.
With the engine running, if I remove the valve cover vent tube that plugs into the turbo inlet I notice a large amount of air coming out with a some oil mist as well.
The amount of air venting is similiar to putting your hand in front of your face and exhaling somewhat forcefully and steady.
my truck has 49000 on it and i have the crank case vent bypassed so it exits out the rear of the truck. that sounds pretty normal (a constant stream of smoke comming out at idle)
Welcome to the forum. I wouldnt get too excited about the blow by you are seeing (unless it is LOTS ). The diesel engines do seem to produce quite a bit of blow by when idling but when they are being used to make power, the rings seem to seal up and the blow by lessens. That is the reason for the tube to the turbo intake ... burn the gasses up. There are some type of kits that can be added to the engine compartment to do away with the tube going to the turbo. You would have to do a search in this forum for it. Perhaps cookie or one of the gurus can get in here and steer you. Enjoy your scooter.
I have seen several photos of trucks that have bypassed this by just turning the vent 180 and installing a 90 elbow and some rubber hose. I think they just vent it straight out to the atmosphere. Not sure how messy this gets around the end of the hose or in the driveway at home when the truck is sitting there just warming up. Can anyone that has done this shed a little info? Sure would like to keep that oil out of the intercooler tubes if I can but don't want oil dripping on the drive....
To prevent the oil, etc. from dripping on the driveway, I stuck an old style gasser type CV filter, Purolator #B20009 on the end of the 3/4" hose. It collects and holds the oil, so far anyway.
mine vents out near the spare under the truck. i ran the house up and over the master cylinder so any oil residue that does not collect in the housing on the valve cover will have a tuff time getting up and over . i have had it for about a month and not even a single spot of oil in my garage.
