c6 out e40d in 4x4 van?

The c6 in my 81 van is starting to slip when shifting into third. Considering overdrive upgrade. Any info/opinions would be appreciated. 81 e250 van, carbureted 460, c6, bw1356, 35"s

I worked for a Ford Dealership rebuilding them and they are more complicated than they need to be!

Instead of spending $2000 (junk yard price) for the 4 speed auto trans and lord knows how much (dont forget the gear shifter indicator will be wrong as well) for all that other electronic (expensive) crap and all the work to install the computer, and all (quite a lot) the related wiring, just rebuild your heafty C6, add a Gear vendor OD unit to the back, and you can have a reliable 6 speed auto trans that's cheap to rebuild as well!

One that will not cost you $2000 to $4000 to rebuild when a minor electrical glitch toasts your trans!

The E4OD reminds me of that guy Rube Goldberg was it?
The one that had the most convoluted and complicated way to do something simple?
That's a 4 speed E4OD to me compared to a 6 forward and 2 reverse speed C6 (with a Gear Vendor attached that is).

The e4od will be a costly install into your van as archangel has said, not to mention installing a computer to run it, a speed sensor, electronic distributer (rpm pickup), throttle positon sensor, and a few others.

You should look into an AOD (C6 with OD). Can find those pretty cheap, and minor mods to be done for the install. A rebuild AOD, plus some upgrades to handle 460 power, with whatever you need for misc. items, should be under the $1500 mark.

The AOD is as much like a C6 as a turbo 350 is, other than it's a rear wheel drive trans, they are totally different in internal parts and design.
The E4OD was the basic design of the C6 upgraded and modified to add a fourth speed and a lock up converter, they also have many parts that will swap over.
The AOD can be made to handle 460 power, but it will cost ya big to get it to keep up with a C6 so it (the AOD) should be considered a small block option in my opinion.

Sorry for the confusion, I was refering to size and ease of bolt in compatibility, not the internals. The AOD is only 1/2" longer, and shift linkage setup is close to the same, operation close to the same, no electronics to rig up, no column to change.

I believe there is a tech article in the transmission section on C6 to AOD swap. If I remember the guy went the high dollar route, but it is not needed if it is a close to stock 460. I am going to have to re-read it again.

An AOD built to handle 800hp and an adapter plate for the 460 would put you under $2k, less money for a lower hp build. Comes out a bit less than a $2900 GV OD unit.

Just another avenue to reseach for you bulletproof

There are two different 1st and 2nd gear ratios available for the C6 from the E4OD and if you gear the rear end for the final drive ratio you want the lower 1st and 2nd will make towing and pulling easier from a stand still while keeping a taller top gear ratio for the freeway.
