Congrats on firefighter 1! there is a lot more training than that, but keep it up. as a new firefighter, learn from the older and more experianced firefighters on your dept. Don't ask questions when told to do something unless there is a saftey issue involved, and have fun.

Keep up on your training. Sign up often, sign up fast. I agree with Jmatteau, not to ask when told, unless its a safety issue.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. Get as much training as possible and always wear your protective gear. Learn from the veterans and follow safety rules. Have fun!

Career firefighter for 30 years. Firefighter for six yrs., captain for eights years including 1-1/2 yrs. in the fire prevention bureau, and sixteen yrs. as asst. chief. Training never ends. The more you know, the more you realize you don't know. I still see and learn new things all the time.

Volunteer for 6 years, paid for 14 years. Had to take early retirement due to knee injury. Enjoy everyday of it, you never know when you might have to give it up. Been away from it for 5 years and still miss it everyday. Take every class you can and learn as much as you can from the older guys. No matter how much you train you will always run across something unexpected.

I was a fire fighter for about 4 years before I joined the Army. I'm thinking about getting back on a department soon, but I'm not too sure. I'm tourn between a career as a fire fighter or a soldier. I love em both. I need to decide soon though.

Can you request to be a military firerighter, perhaps on a base, or is that even an option in the military?

Yea it sure is. But since I've already been trained as a mechanic (63B) I'd have to wait untill firefighter (51M) is in more demand than mechanics otherwise they wont send me to be trained. Even though I have my civi certs. I've already looked into that option believe me, but thanks a lot for the suggestion!
