Paid call firefighter back in the late 60's and 70's. Volunteer ambulance in the late 90's. (Police Officer in between) I'm too old to do that stuff anymore.
VFF for about a year before I left for college, been there 2 years, but moving back home, so I'll be getting back into it. Got my EMT training last summer. My fire district is 20% fires, 80% MVAs, so I figured I should get the EMT.
My husband has been a volunteer for about 8 years. I, myself, am on the board of directors and organize a benefit car show for the department. E-mail for info. The plans for this year are in the works.
Volunteer for 12 yrs, paid for 6. Most of the posts have hit the nail on the head. Always look up to the senior guys, firefighting in most departments is still very traditional, i.e seniority is important. If there is a volunteer dept. around you join there and take all the classes you can. Test at many different departments, even if you don't think you want to work their, many people that would have made good ff's aren't because of the testing procedure. Never give up before or after you get hired, train and listen. The classes and books are informational but the senior guys will keep you alive. It's a great career and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Any young guys/gals out there have any questions don't be afraid to ask. Always willing to help out.
i'm the third generation of firemen in my department (Mahopac Falls VFD in New York) i've only been in 2 years but i am though firefighter 1 and also halfway through emt and am an open water rescue diver. In my two years and from the guys at the fd my advice is= sit down, shut up, and hold on, don't make enemys because it will bite you when you don't expect it and never push yourself to the limit especially when you got to go to your real work the next morning....
My wonderful wife is a 3 year Lieutenant with our City Fire Department (Tallahassee). She was a FF for about 5 years, a D/O for about 4 years, She is an EMT as well. With her 24 on and 48 off she will never trade it for a 8-5 job. She also is a member of the Department Honor Guard which has won first place in the southeast competition two years running.
