Cars were required to have driver's air bags in 1986, don't know about the trucks, but all of them, trucks included (except commercial trucks) were required to have dual air bags in 1994.
in 1987 i had a 1976 Ford F150 or F 100 longbox pickup ( i forget the exact model now but it was red lol) and i would take my ex wife and her mother out in that. A case could be made for that truck having dual airbags in it
if a car had automatic seatbelts, it didn't have to have airbags.
airbags weren't federally mandated until 1990. ford put them into their cars in 1989. the law for airbags was put into effect in 1986, but the 4 years was given for any redesigns to include airbags. it was kinda hard to desgin and retrofit an airbag system into a modern car.
