Mudding is fun but costly

I got a 88 ranger that ran great before last summer, Usually the engine is not the weakest link the axles on the rangers are crappy.I spent probably close to $2000 on axles and clutches and various other things that occur during mudding. A hose kept my engine clean and that is important because of heating, If your engine is coated in mud in some spots and not in other you have variable heating where it's not designed to have heating. the worst part on you engine is getting stuck which is a part of any mudding experience. just don't overheat.

is it just mud or is it grease

Mud's water soluble, so it depends If it's just mud it's alright but always have a cool engine never hot. simple green works pretty good I've never actually tried but I haven't had a problem with just a hose. I know friend s that have tried the simple green stuff. If there's mud in there it was obviously wet once already. so getting your engine wet isn't the worst thing in the world just don't spray things like your coil or distributor for any amount of time. if it's more than mud like oil then you'll definately need some sort of degreaser and i don't know all that much about simple green, whether it will take off grease and oil, but if you want to really cheap, dish soap cuts grease well just spray it with dish soap and let it sit for over night and spray it again and rinse. it should be off by then.
