Ok one last time and I will leave you guys alone. I want to know if there is any way to install a C4 or 4/5 speed manual transmission on a Y-block 292 without having to drop over $300 for an adapter. I am very serios since I am at the stage of putting my motor and transmission on ebay. If there is a way and it is cheap I will stay with the motor and if not then its history. Thanks to all that answer. Ed
Well, I for one am glad you've been asking the question. Because you asked, I tried a few transmission and bellhousing combinations. I just found out that the RUG 4sp OD transmission fits where the original T-85 3sp fits. I'll have to do more research to resolve the issues of input shaft length, pilot bearing size, etc., but the fact that the transmission case bolts up is a good sign.
The RUG upper/outer two bolt holes seem to fit up to the T-18 bell but the lower two don't. But I could see where a small amount of welding would build up the surface on the bellhousing enough to make a RUG, and I presume, a Toploader, fit the T-18 bellhousing.
The World Class V8 T-5 transmission to T-85 3sp bellhousing would require an adapter, but the design of the adapter would be pretty simple and be a fool-resistant installation. T-5 trans to T-18 bell would be a more complex lash-up.
Oh, and the FMX automatic fits up to the FM bellhousing with minor modifications, too.
Yes I konw about the FMX thanks to you guys. I have researched it and have decided against it. I am trying to lighten the truck. If not I could have had a 390 with a c6 ready to go for free. Plus I am just not hot on a 3 spd automatic when gas prices are getting close to $2 a gallon. I am only now willing to look at a 4spd standard after seeing that my cherished 292 is in such good condition. Oh well I will make a few more searches and then the y-block is history. Ed
Go to www.badgerlandf100s.com and look at the tech story on adapting a T-5 behind a Y-block. The guys who did it also did one behind a 223 6 cylinder first.
Its a 3spd OD and from what I have seen it does not get very good mileage nor from what I heat will I be able to ever get the truck above 65 mph. Yes I do have a 4.5 rearend so I know that is most of the problem. I also want to get rid of the column shift since it needs to be rebuilt and the cost far outweighs a new transmission.
Plus as I said this is going to be a daily driver. I want as much convenience as I can afford. I also do not want to deal with serious mods that require more then my average skills. The most I can handle is bolt ons and a little welding but no serious welding mods. Weight is always a factor. Gas mileage is important and a truck that is 300 to 400 lbs heavier then it has to be is not going to help that matter. I know that I will only be saving a little but that is one of my goals. Hey Ed, How about a 289 with a c4? I just went on my first long drive. It got over 17 mpg with the A/C on the way back in the afternoon. The small block Fords are plentiful and parts are too. Good luck, John
Hello John. I am not so sure which way to go now. I have been looking at the small blocks and specifically the EFI ones. I figured that if I am going to go small block or that series then I should lower the cost by not having a carb. Although I will be the first to admit that I am increasing my wiring nightmares. I still have to finish the body repairs so I am not really sure which engine I am going with but I want to make sure I cover all before I list my yblock. Ed
If you have that short a gear in the rear axle, only an overdrive is going to be of any help. The .68 5th in a T5 would pull that 4.5 down to a 3:06. This means that a 4 speed likely won't do it unless the 4rth is an overdrive. A lot of 4 speeds are 1:1 in 4rth just like 3 spd automatics in 3rd. It might be simpler to change the rear gears to a good highway gear and just keep the 292 and 3 spd.
I am going to get a 9" rear end and I want a 3.55 or 3.2? so I will be fixing that problem first since it is the cheapest. I will quander the engine solution for a bit while I do some more research on the net. I do have some ideas though and they are pretty neat so far.
I've never tried what you are talking about mating a different tranny to the y block, but I know that a T98 has been used in Fords for a very long time. It is possible that if you find the right donor, everything would bolt up beautifully! The T98 evolved into the T18 and there are very minor differences between the two. But I bet if you can find the bellhousing from that era it might work. I'm fairly young and y blocks were before my time by a long shot. So maybe someone more experienced could either back me up or set me straight?
As for me I went ahead with a 302 and T18, and am about to see how it all works in a week or two.
