Here is the problem:
I have an 87 bronco II w/ 2.9. The engine idles fine when warm but when accelerator is pressed, it cuts out and then revs up. When heavy acceleration is pressed it backfires out of the throttle body. What is the problem?
new plugs and wires, fuel filter, and air filter. I went to autozone and they pulled two codes. 29 and I think 32 (egr related). 29 was speed sensor and I replaced it, but the speedometer still does not work. If I start the Bronco when it is cold, it will run for about 10 seconds and die. I usually have to start it and then immediately put it in gear (auto) and drive it to get it to warm up. Once it warms up it drives decent but it still backfires through the TB.
The cold surging can be caused by several things. On my 87, the tube from the air plenum to the EGR gets clogged up and needs to be cleaned. Remove the throttle body and clean out the tube. Its a pain, and not one of Fords better ideas. Be careful with the heat tube that comes out the bottom of the EGR valve. Depending on the condition of the pipe where it goes into the manifold, you could break it off if you twist the top to hard. Clean it and then pull the codes again. Many of the self help manuals out there do not have the correct information concerning codes for the BII. Your speedo works off a cable that goes to the tranny, not the speed sensor. You will need to replace the cable, most likely.
