You can put a slide in camper on it, just not a heavy one or a long one. Check out Six Pac campers, they make a short bed model, as do a few other companies. Watch your wieght though, campers get heavy real quick once you start loading them, and the weights the manufacturers specify are for bone stock campers with no options and nothing in the tanks. Wiegh your truck and subtract that from your GVWR to find out how much camper you can carry. Also, frame mounted tiedowns are a good way to go, rather than the bed-mounted ones, since the sheetmetal is thin on our trucks. As for towing capacity, that will also depend on what rear end ratio your truck has. Lower ratios (numerically higher) yeild higher towing capacities. With a half ton, I would keep the trailer wieght below 5000 lbs and you should do fine.
According to Ford's towing guide from 1993 you can tow 7100# for a travel trailer or fifthwheel. For a truck camper you should be ok with a light weight or pop-up style, I would try to keep the empty weight of the camper in the 14-1600# range, if you go heavier than that you should look into adding an air bag assist for the weight. I would also look for tie downs that attach to the frame, avoid using the stake pocket tie downs due to thinner metals being used on the newer trucks (from the mid 80's or newer). They just don't build them the way they used too
Which transmission do you have? Standard to auto makes a big difference in capacity. Also , a set of LT tires in load range "C" would be helpful.P metrics wear too quick for towing , and are generally for light duty.LT tires are 6 ply and are meant to handle loading and towing.
Your unladen weight is probably about 4550 lbs. CA registration cards show it, does AZ?
That leaves you 1700 lbs for loading the truck, including driver, passengers and cargo. Most slide-in campers are above 2200. I have a Four Wheel pop-up slide-in that only weighs 965, dry, for the eight foot model.
