Truck info: 78 bronco with a built 351M bored .30 over with 400 crank. 4V cleveland heads from a 70 mustang and edelbrock intake.
I need a new distributor cap and rotor for it but the stock one was ditched in favor of an accel unit from the previous owner. I did not do any of the work to it so I don't know where he bought the distributor or how to get replacement parts for it. I tried all the local parts stores that carry accel dist.'s and no one carries one for a 78 351m. I also checked summit, jegs, and even the accel site and all I can't find a straight answer. The part number on the dist. is facing the intake manifold and cannot be read without taking the whole unit out which I don't want to do. Does anyone know what model dist. cap I need to order that will fit a 1978 351M?
Why don't you try using a mirror to read the part number? If the number is stamped you could also try some sort of paint and then using a paper strip to see if it makes a mark, or taking a cell phone picture... Anyway since it's THE CAP as you stated, taking it out to check the number should be easy.

I would have tried the things you mentioned if I could have. There is not enough room between the distributor and the intake manifold to fit even my pinky finger to try any of those methods. I already took the cap off and used it for reference trying to match it online and in local stores. The problem is that the ACCEL brand distributor I have does not have any ID on the cap it's only on the actual dist. itself which is not visable. The dist. has no stamping/engraving on it, it only has a sticker on the backside from what I could feel with my sausage sized pinky. I tried to grab the sticker with some forceps and peel it off but it's too brittle to peel. I can't spend much more time on this because I have a bad back and cannot lean over for too long. That is why I was wondering if anyone has used an ACCEL distributor on a 78 351m before and knows what exact part I need so I don't have to go through the pain of leaning over into the engine bay. Sitting for long periods of time also makes the discs in my back act up so I don't want to spend all day surfing the web again like I did before to only find nothing. I really need help on this one.
I really didn't want to call Accel and go that route since I don't want to have to charge the cap and rotor on my credit card. I was hoping that someone knew the actual part number so I could get one through Paypal on Ebay or at a store so I could pay in cash. Does anyone know the number I need?

Not that you have to purchase from them, just get the part number.

I still then would have to find a place that has one. My question is, who sells older Accel parts. I imagine my unit is an outdated one since I have not been able to find one that looks like mine nor have I even found another picture online that looks similar to what I have. My unit is a tan screwdown cap that has a cover that goes over the wires that also screws down with only two screws. Every other unit I have seen has 3 screws on the wire cover and is larger. My cap is only 3.5 inches in diameter.
Unless you're just brand loyal to Accel, I know advance sells MSD rotors/cap kits. They only cost about $30. I can't imagine that the cap wouldn't fit.
Also just go to summit's website and type in the info and see what comes up. Over the years the color may have changed. Also they may just use a reference photo not the actual product in the description.
Heres a tan Accel set-up for you $25 Just reuse you cover for the wires. Too easy.
Heres what? Was there suppose to be a link to the item? It sounds easy but like I said, every unit I have seen is not the same as mine. So if the item for sale is not the same as the one pictured then I still won't know if I'm getting the right item. The one I have is hard to find and if I could afford it, I would have just replaced the whole distributor to a modern MSD unit but I'm stuck with what I have so I just need a cap/rotor.
Hello. Were you suppose to be showing me a link? It's not as easy as you say. I've been searching for a long time now and nobody has the cap I'm looking for. Not summit, Jegs, LMC, JCwhitney, etc. NOBODY. Not easy.
IIRC: The Accel caps for their distributors have two options: They are either hei or not; and, screw on or clip on.
If you have electronic igintion with vacume advance 90% probability it is a 5200 series. Pretty much any cap for the 5200 series is interchangable. If it fits one V8 it fits all of them.
