Pre or Post Turbo

hey im putting in my pyrometer. i was wanting to know should i put it in pre turbo or post turbo? people on here have said they have heard of them breaking off or melting and going in to the turbo and messing it up. is this common. the only thing i dont like about post turbo is its not as acurate as if i would put it pre turbo in the up pipe. please i need opinions thanks.

Comes down to what degree of risk you are comfortable with. The mechanic I take my rig to has even seen the 'competition' grade probes melt.

It isn't a big deal to add 200 degrees to the gauge reading for me vs. taking the risk of having to replace the turbo.

He also told me that the modern turbos aren't as sensitive to heat as they once were either, (not that you want to chip it, tow 8000+ pounds with your foot to the floor and not give it a thought), but as compared with the older turbos (didn't have sealed bearings, etc???) they aren't as sensitive to heat.

Starrott04 -- No question in my mind. Pre-turbo. It is not as easy as adding a couple hundred degrees. Testing with dual probes has yeilded up to a 500 degree difference depending on boost levels. This was with a modified truck, but even a stock one can get a 300 to 400 degree variance at upper boost ranges. You can use a sliding scale and add degrees as the boost levels rise, but there really is no need.

I have heard of rumors of probes melting, breaking, or taking out a turbo -- Yet, I have never heard a first hand account. Airplanes have pre-trubo pyros and you can't find a much more strict mechanical atmosphere than airplanes. Except maybe for the military, and some of their units have pre-turbo pyros also. The nice thing about pre-turbo is that you get quick and accurate info immediately. It really isn't that hard to install one either.
