I would like to add a tachometer to my '84 F250 with the 6.9. Is there a tach wire somewhere in the engine compartment? If I find a dash panel with a tach, will the tach automatiaclly work? If so, doesn't that mean that there is a tach wire somewhere? Also, would the dash panel have to be from a diesel, or would a gas panel work?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Dec-02 AT 01:01 PM (EST)]Hi,
if you can get a tach, or better the whole cluster (you need the printed curuit), it's not very hard to install it since all wires you need are in your truck .
If you only can get the tach...it's not unpossible to install but in that case you have to do some rewiring work. (you can get more information if you want, I did it)
The only thing you need is the sensor, which is mounted to the gear housing infront of you injection pump. (There must be a unused wiring assy which stops over your injetion pump. Connect the sensor to the assy, the cluster into the dash and the tach will work.
Here is the part number of the sensor, if you can't get one from the junkyard: E5TF-17B384-AA for $78.00(only available from Ford)
I was of the impression that all the diesels had the tach in them.
If you go for the tach and yours doesnt have the proper injection pump mount housing, you will also need one of them. The clearance for the sensor is in that. The sensor requires clearance in the injection pump drive gear. The sensor counts the teeth in that gear in order to work. The wire in your engine compartment will have a 2 wire connection on it and should be lying somewhere along the passenger side valve cover or in that area.
