I just bought a clean f-350 4x2 stake truck for 200 bucks the body is great but the motor is frozen so i was wondering what the best way to unlock the motor is. I also have a 460 and i wonder how hard it is to swap the motors. Is it a direct bolt in? if not what do I need. Thanks a lot for the help.
pull the plugs a puor in a mix of trany fluid and the best penitrating fluid you got and let it sit for a day or two like that then try to turn it over (with the plugs still out) and hope for the best other wise just through in the 460 and be happy
Utilize a good amount of penetration oil in the plug hgoles. Then after the engine turns, drain the oil, and change it. next tune up the engine completely. you can pull alot of power out of the 351m without swapping for the 460 and have a lighter front end. Definetley think about this before swapping engines. There are some good articles here in the 335 series forums, check em out if you got the time.
I have always has good luck with a mixture of kerosene and ATF. Put a couple ounces in each cylinder and let it sit for a couple of days and then try turning it over with a strong arm and socket on the crank bolt.
Thanks for all the ideas! Iwill let you all know in a couple of days if all went well. I would love to keep it orginal she only has 50,000 on the truck (old apple farm truck that has not seem a michigan winter) Thans again i will keep you updated.
Are you sure the motor froze, was it exposed to the elements, did a head gasket let go, or is there something broke inside? If you have a rod that let loose, you will not be able to turn the crank no matter how much you dump down the cylinders. I would pull the oil pan and take a look from below before taking on the other attempts.

It could be hydro-locked from a bad head gasket. But you will find that when you pull the spark plugs.
I just un-locked a 400 that had this very problem. It was locked up tight, pulled the plugs, turned right over and shot water clear out on the wheel wells.
Old coolant had caused the head gaskets to deteriorate.
The 351M is a boat anchor anyway. LOL. The 460 will bolt up to the transmisiion you have. You need to swap out the engine mounts/stands though, or build something custom. I know you say you would like to keep it original, but the only value of that would be to yourself. There isn't much of a market out there for older original stake trucks.
EEeehhh, Id dispute the misleading statement about the boat anchor. I can get 15 mpg, have a higher payload capacity on stock springs, and pull as much power out of my 351m as any old 460. BOTH are good engines. The 351m and 400 where just toned way down for smog. If you go to the 335 series forums here, you will see some kick a** builds. All for about the same price as swapping in a tired 460 workhorse.
