I have a driver's door power window that works sometimes. Sometimes it stops going either up or down. I guess it's moody. If I let it rest it will work again in about 30 seconds..sometimes a minute. It always will finish going up or down. Doesn't leave you stranded. I'm going after it tomorrow. So far my plan is to spray silicone in window channels, change fuse [get a self setting circuit breaker if I can find one]. Also I will clean all electrical contacts with tuner cleaner or electric parts cleaner. If this doesn't do it, does anyone have a plan B for me to try? Is there a quick test to see if the window motor is good?
Thanks
Never had to mess with mine. But I did read in my manual and it said there is a thermal breaker in the motor as a safety feature in case something jammed the window from opening or closing. You are on the right track, remove the door panel and inspect the channels and linkage, check for wear and binding. Put a coat of white lithium grease on the linkage pivot points. Good luck.
You may want to pull the window motor and clean up the armature. While there you might as well replace the brushes. Disassemble the drive mechanism and look for worn parts. Oreilly has a power window rebuild kit for aroung $30. One other note on that, there are three nylon pieces in the drive mechanism. I found a supplier for nylon bar stock, cut them to the correct lenght, problem fixed. Nylon bar stock about a dollar a foot.
I read that they use the thermal fuse to shut the power off when the window meets the stop. You can hold the switch down but the thermal fuse removes power from the motor when the motor can't turn. Not sure where they hide the thermal fuse.
Plan B. Hmmmm. I guess bypass the thermal fuse. Be careful when the window comes to its stop. It could stress the glass.
I replaced a window motor 97 taurus the only thing that stopes the window is the thermal overload. if the window binds the thermal overload will prevent the window from operating
Thanks guys for the tips. Nothing I did today helped. I'm gonna wait for the weekend to pull stuff apart. Pretty sure you're right about the motor. When it stops working, the other window works even though I'm holding the button down or up on the bad side, so the master switch is getting juice. It has something to do with heat because the longer I wait after it quits, the longer it will work the window up or down. 30 second wait gets me an inch. If I wait about 3 to 5 minutes, it will make the full trip up or down. Probably wore it out with all those Burger King, and Dunkin Donuts drive throughs.
Appreciate the help!!
