Small plastic box below battery?

Hi, I have a 1988 Bronco 351w. There is a small plastic container that is below the battery on the passenger side. It has 2 hoses coming from it. One hose goes to the intake and the other hose connects to a rail that goes to the rear of the vehicle. I just noticed that one of the hoses is broken and looks like it has been that way for a while. Can someone tell me what this thing is and what is its purpose?

Thanks...Doug

If it's anything like my truck it pulls vapor from the gas tank and pipes it into the intake. It's part of the emissions system.

Yes, that thing deals with emissions. If I remember right, its called a gulp valve. I'll need to verify though.

It's called a carbon canister, although it doesn't look like a canister these days. Leave it alone unless you've got a good reason to unhook it.
