Awhile back I found a link for an OBD-II scan tool that attached via serial or USB and included full documentation on it's protocol such that one could design one's own applications around it.
I've seen a lot of support for the preditor and microchips here and on other boards. The preditor mentions that it has a dataport "to download in the future" (seeming to imply that it wasn't implemented/supported yet).
I would like to know which, if any, of these tools allow connection to a computer. In a perfect world, the computer would be attached fulltime.

The Predator reads codes and has a real time data logging function when connected to a PC
Predator also has download and upload functions to and from a PC. You can save original and custom programs to PC as well as upload upgrades in addition to what Bob just posted. This capability is one of the reasons I got the Predator. It's worth it.
I use Scan Tool by Auto Enginuity , it works on all my vehicles. Ive had it for several weeks but haven't posted about it yet because he said he was working on a new version. This new version came about specifically for the powerstroke CAN bus. It works good the way it is, I can read about 7 sensors, perform tests, read and reset codes, it even has a dyno. I was hoping it would read more sensors because the 6.0 is loaded with them, maybe the new version will address this.
OK... this brings up another issue. Lots of devices (including the Predator) talk about the ODB-II capability. Some things talk about the CAN bus capability.
Now the Preditor says that it supports the 2004 powerstroke, but a number of these tools talk about the 2004 vehicles having CAN not OBD-II.
Is CAN a superset upgrade to OBD-II? Can someone explain?

psdwanabe: I am interested in the Auto Enginuity. I have the AutoXray EZ Scan 6000 and am not too happy with the lack of sensor information for EBP, ICP, etc. I was searching the internet looking to see what I could find out about the Auto Enginuity and found this old link on FTE.
I am hoping that you have the latest upgrade and the extended Ford data. What is your opinion of the Auto Enginuity now that you have had it for a while?
you might want to try auto tap. we have used it on a 7.3 it tells exaust temp tranny slip reads code tells you injecter pulse width and much much more. it cost about 3-5 hundred dollars. you install it on your lap top and connect to your vehicle. I just havent tried it on my 6.0 yet because the laptop we were using bit the dust. If I get time tonight I will install it into my new laptop and try it on the 6.0.

The autotap is what I have ran in the past, it works great.
The software for CAN-BUS hasn't been released by autotap, but a sales rep told me a month or so ago that it will hopefully be soon- you'll be able to pick it up off thier website for free, assuming you have the USB version of the hardware (not the serial version).
I used it extensively on my 5.4, it is a great peice of equipment.
