Hi and welcome to FTE! I had the same problem a while back with my 79 and it turned out to be my headlight switch. Couldn't be a short or it would blow the fuse, and to work intermittently kind of makes a bad conection unlikely. You could check and make sure the plug is tightly attached to the switch, and check the plug at the firewall, but I'd put my money on the switch. They are available at most auto parts stores. My 79 lights started flashing only when the truck was going down the road I put a new switch in it and that didn't work.Turned out the pass. side wiring harness to the head light, had been rubbed through where it passes the battery box. The wind comming through the core support would short it while I was driving.Seems like nothing is ever simple around here.

The circuit breaker for the lights is in the headlight switch. Mine would do this with a trailer hooked up (more bulbs=more load). Replaced the headlight switch no more problems. Occasionally, you will run into a problem like Mark had, but 95% of the time it is a weak circuit breaker in the switch.
