Start... Run ... Stop following oil change change

Hey ya'll,

I just had the oil changed in my 2000 F250 PSD. The correct amount of Rotella was added and a Purolator Diesel oil filter was used. Following the service, the truck was running fine and then just shut down with the "Service Engine Soon" light on. The truck restarted and ran okay for the 10 mile trip home.

The same scenario occurred the next day. The truck ran fine for 30 minutes and then shut down. This time I noticed that if I waited for it to cool, it would restart and run again for another couple of miles. However, the problem was occurring at shorter intervals.

I went ahead and changed the fuel filter thinking that could be the root cause but it had no affect. All fluid levels are correct and there are no leaks anywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions??? I'm about to pull my hair out trying to locate the problem.

Thanks in advance,

Travis

Hi Travis,

It may just be coincindental that this happened after your oil change. It sounds like the Cam Position Sensor is out. If you use the search feature and do a search for CPS or Cam Position Sensor you should find a ton of good info.

Thank you for the quick response. I'll checkout the info on the cam sensors. It could be a coincidence on the timing. Appreciate the help.

Resolution on problem.... All of the posts regarding the CPS were correct. I had both a bad CPS and Rear Exhaust Sensor. I'm surprised since there is only 52,000 miles on the truck but judging by the multitude of posts, there doesn't really seem to be a general time period in which these sensors fail.

Luckily, the sensors are under warranty. Now here's a new one on me... the dealer says that after 36,000 miles, the owner incurs a $100 deductible for warranty work. This is a first on me. I haven't checked the warranty book yet that came with the truck but I always assumed that the warranty was till 100,000 complete. I'll look into it further.

Thanks again for the help, This board is excellent.

Yes... The deductible applies after 36,000 miles.

The reply by teambadfish mentioned a rear exhaust sensor.
What is it, where is it and what does it do???
I just got the idi 7,3 figured out and now purchased a 2000 psd with all them extra wires and hoses on it. (yahoooo) Any answers would be appreciated. I love the power but the extra hoses and sensors got me "SO CONFUSED"
Happy New Year to all
