i have a 1974 f-750 with what the machinest told was a 361 engine.last week the engine died.i drained the oil and got a gallon of coolant first.i just received a 370 from a 1979 f-650.some one told me this motor would not work.the f-650 had the same tranny but the bell housing is different.if i use the bell housing from the 650 in my 750 would that correct the problem or should i just find the proper engine? if i should use the proper engine where can i get one?i have called every one i know with in a 100 mile radius of nashua nh and they have nothing.or what the have looks like i need a shot just to touch it.any help would be greatly app.
if i use the bell housing from the 79 ford f-650 which is a 460 style bell housing will it work in my 74 ford f-750 with the rounded style bell housing? i know the 74 bell housing in my truck now(stock)won't bolt to the 370 from the 79 f-650.i guess my real question is if i use the motor and the bell housing from the 79 am i going to have trouble with other things like the clutch linkages and so on?also my truck has air brakes and the 79 did not.is this going to be a problem?i mean will the air compressor and bracketry bolt to the front of the 370 or is the 370 no equiped for it?

When you say the "engine died", what do you mean? Coolant in the oil is likley the head gasket and these are available and fairly easy to install. I'd look for the easy stuff first. Head gaskets and maybe a valve job could provide many more miles from this truck for little money.
it not only died it snaped some thing in side.when you try and turn it over with a wrench it turns in reverse so far then turns back so far.the problem is i need to get the truck back on the road now because i use it to deliver cord wood.if it snaped a rod it didn't punch the block.i don't think.the only reason i say that is because i don't see any cracks on either side of the block.as far as changing the engine and tranny, will i be able to bolt the air compressor to the front of the 370?

You are considering swaping to a different family of engine. There are usually numerous complications involved when people do these swaps. For example, the radiator hose connections may not be where they need to be. Various linkages, brackets, and compressor connections will require change as well. The 361 engine is known as an FE engine and this version is usually worked to death in larger trucks, but they are out there. I am not ready to give up on simply determining what is wrong with your engine and repairing or replacing it. Not being able to turn it over is not a good sign but it could still be a simple head gasket (coolant is in the cylinder). Take out the spark plugs and try again to turn it over. Or pull the heads and have a look. It will be simpler to repair or exchange what you have and I believe in the long run a better option for you. You will need a helpful mechanic whichever way you decide to go.
thanks for all the info guys.this is only the second ford that i have owned so fords are kind of new to me.i'm the type of guy who likes to own any thing every one else likes to hate because it's ugly or it's not fast.then i make it do what every one say's it can't.YES i have hit a few exceptions to this way of thinking.i'm new to this web site and am hopeing to be a member soon but you guys have treated me great and helped me out alot.i've even been able to help out a couple of you because of the extensive research i have done on the 347 project in my 86 capri.thanks to all of you it's great.
