Cab replacement issues

It's been a while since I've posted here, primarily due to computer issues and long work hours.

I have a '75 F150 with a 390 and C6 (Converted the grille over to a '79). In November, I rear-ended someone totalling the entire front clip and slightly damaging the firewall.

I was told that the firewall could not be repaired, and that my cab was totalled, so I searched for a replacement cab and front clip. I did find replacements from a '78 F150 Ranger XLT Lariat, but recently I ran into a setback. The replacement cab ended up catching fire at the wrecking yard four days ago while the mechanics were separating the bed from the frame (I was also buying the bed for a total body replacement). That left me with the option of the two remaining truck cabs. One is from a '73 F100 Custom, the other is from a '77 F150 Custom. Both are shortboxes (Mine is a long box) and both have 4WD; the '73 has a manual transmission.

I've been told that the cab from a 4WD will not fit onto the frame of a 2WD truck, yet the cab mounts look exactly identical, and have the same distance separating them.

I'm looking for some insight to settle this debate I've been having with relatives who tell me it's impossible, and with others who tell me it is.

I really love and miss my truck, and I'm wanting to have it back on the road in no time.

Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome back Steve, I have never heard of the cabs being different on a 2wd or 4x4. They should bolt up the same on either.

Thanks.

I hope the firewall damage is reparable with a few welds and some dent removal on my existing cab before I resort to buying a whole new cab.

The floor pans are different between the 2wd/4wd and auto/manual trucks, having a higher tranny tunnel in both latter cases.

I've never seen a differance in floor pans. However when I got a '78 2 wheel drive cab,to put on my '79 F250 4by4, I had to cut a small notch out of a crossmember under the cab. It sat down on the transfer case. I wouldn't have even noticed it if I'd had my body lift on then. Thats the only differance I"ve ever noticed.

I put a 78 cab 2wd onto my 74 4wd and the only mods I had to do were cut out the hole for the 4wd shifter plate that bolts to the floor, and drill 2 holes for the rear cab mounts,
