I have a '75 F-250, problem is it's not really a '75. I'm not sure what year it is, but the VIN only tells me the info for the cab. I have a bent front axle and need to replace the axle housing. I haven't been able to find anyone willing to sell me the axle housing. I have decided to try and find an entire front axle. I am not sure what years would be interchangeable, so any help would be appreciated.
The axles in it have a metal tab attached to the diff cover instead of numbers on the tube like all of the books say. The numbers are as follows
Front Axle - 4.09 D4TA ZA
603472 5
Rear Axle - 4.10 EDD7IA A
603901 - 6 I S
I realize it is a Dana 44 front and should be a Dana 60 rear, but the biggest question I have is what these numbers mean, and what years I can swap under the truck without fabrication.
I'm still curious as to what exactly I have under my truck. I'm new to the Ford world, started off with this one, and it's proving to be quite a challenge. I have called more than a few local shops and every one gives me a different answer about what I can put under the truck without fabrication and the Ford dealership said the housing is the same part number all the way up to the new super duty models, 97 I think?
Well, your front axle is a Dana 44 with a 4.09 ratio and should have 30 splines. Your rear axle is a Dana 60 and also has 30 splines. Since all you need is the axle housing itself, you should be able to use an 8 lug front axle from any 73-77 4x4 Ford F250. You could get away with a 78 or 79 axle but you'd have to remount the perches (due to wider 78/79 frame). If you can weld, it would be worth it as you'd end up with disc brakes. Why don't you think your truck is a '75 model?
I don't think my truck is a '75 because none of the parts I have had to pick up have matched what they pull from behind the part counter from the listing for a '75. Every time I walk into a parts store we have to match what I'm looking for with the old part instead of just going with the part number their system calls for. The guy I bought it from said it was a '75 with a '79 grill. I'm beginning to think only the cab (and vin) are a '75. It's a super cab, long bed, 4x4 with a 460. The vin is for a 2 wheel drive with a 460. In '75 they didn't put a 460 in a 4x4 and I was told that Ford didn't make a 4x4 super cab F-250 in '75 either. I was told to look for a vin on the frame, but I couldn't find it. I asked a local 4x4 shop if it was a 2 wheel drive truck that somebody converted to 4x4, but they said no, it is a 4x4 frame. Anyway, any time I pick up something for the truck based on it being a '75 it doesn't fit, and nothing seems to add up. How far apart are the spring perches on a '78-79? What about on a '73-'77? Maybe that will help me figure out what is going on.
