Axle Question

I have a '75 F-250, problem is it's not really a '75. I'm not sure what year it is, but the VIN only tells me the info for the cab. I have a bent front axle and need to replace the axle housing. I haven't been able to find anyone willing to sell me the axle housing. I have decided to try and find an entire front axle. I am not sure what years would be interchangeable, so any help would be appreciated.

The axles in it have a metal tab attached to the diff cover instead of numbers on the tube like all of the books say. The numbers are as follows

Front Axle - 4.09 D4TA ZA
603472 5

Rear Axle - 4.10 EDD7IA A
603901 - 6 I S

I realize it is a Dana 44 front and should be a Dana 60 rear, but the biggest question I have is what these numbers mean, and what years I can swap under the truck without fabrication.

I'm surprised the moderator hasn't moved this to 73-79 forum. I think you'll be OK if you break the rule once and re-post there.

Do you know if is high pinon or low pinon? Does it have inclosed steering or can you see the u joints. I have a 1975 front axle with no gears in it just a housing.

The six-digit number starting with a "6" is your bill of materials number used to id the axle and when ordering any parts for it. A Dana catalog will have the listing for you if you want. But you are wise to just replace the entire front axle with any mid-to-late 70's D44.

Doug,

I took a look under my truck and would have to guess that it is high pinion. I'm not sure exactly how to tell the difference as I've never really done any work on either one, but the front driveshaft goes into the third member at the top half. Part of the steering bends underneath it, or maybe it's a sway bar. I can see the u joints so it does not have enclosed steering. I have been having lots of difficulty locating a housing or even an entire front axle for the truck. I recently acquired a guide to salvage yards in San Antonio and will try there next.

I tried to e-mail you in regards to the '75 axle housing that you have but the system will not let me e-mail you. The moderators don't like comments about buying, selling or trading on the sight and I don't think they'll allow posting e-mail addresses in replies. I'm not sure how to go about getting contact information, but I would like to talk to you about the axle housing.

You didn't say if you have drum brake or disk? It sounds like you have a 19771/2 or newer axle. I have both will jusy have to wait till the moderator let me have e- mail

Doug.
