Basic Muffler Install

Hello,
I just ordered a 50 series flowmaster for my 2001 which I plan to install myself (i hope). I've never installed a muffler before. I noticed the flowmaster is a few inches shorter than stock, so I am assuming I will need to add a short length of pipe. What I am wondering, if I buy pipe the same diameter as the existing pie, how will I force the new section of pipe into the old section?
Do I need one of those tools that will expand the pipe, or do you just FORCE it in?

thanks

If you know the exact OD of both your existing tailpipe, and the new muffler, any gas station/mechanic/exhaust shop should be able to cut that piece of pipe you need, plus flare both ends appropriately. I wouldnt waste your time trying to do it yourself. I had an adapter made at the local gas station. It only cost me ten dollars, and fit perfectly.

Its really not that bad. If you know how much shorter your new muffler is versus the existing one, you have determined the length adapter(s) you need (figure you will need one on both ends). Can you operate a ruler and sawzall (or hacksaw)? If so, you can do a muffler swap. Oh, I just reread my initial post. When I said "I wouldnt waste your time trying to do it yourself", I was talking about trying to flare an exhaust pipe. What are the measurements of the openings of the muffler? What is youre stock exhaust size? If you have those figures, the shop can flare them the next bit out. Im sure its a standard flare. You might also consider bringing the muffler with you, to give them something to work against (as well as a piece of the stock exhaust tube, to make the flare perfect. If this still sounds like too much, any exhaust shop should install it for a few bucks. Either way, I hope you enjoy your new muffler.

Most auto parts places have exhaust parts, slip fittings etc. I found a 18" long 2 1/2" exhaust pipe with a swagged end at one that worked perfect for what I was doing at the time. Have a look. An advantage of having a shop do it is they can weld everything up if you don't have a welder.

Maybe I will check the local auto parts store first for the two small pieces I will need. It is sounding like I may just get a shop to install it though as I would hate to cut the old one off and not be able to install the new one...hummm, maybe that wouldnt be so bad!

Do you guys know what a "typical" charge to install a muffler would be?
thanks
