3.0 l Starter replacement

I have trouble cranking my 93 Ranger 3.0 L. When I trurn the igintion on it just gives a single clunking sound and refuses to start. I could start it by rolling down a slope and engaging the clutch in second gear. But yesterday I could start it on the first turn of the key. I took the truck over to Midas and the guy up there told me that my starter was bad and it locks up in a certain position. I had replaced the starter 2 years back.

I am thinking of replacing the starter by myself. Has anyone over here replaced a starter on 3.0 l and how diffuclt would the job be.

Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

It should be an easy job if you good with tools. Get a repair manual, it will come in handy for other things too. Before you replace the starter have the battery tested at a parts store, sears, ect. Also clean all the connections, remember to remove the negative battery cable first and reconnect it last.

The culprit may be the "plug on" small wire on the solenoid. It is just another type of spade connector and is exposed to the elements. It will corrode to the point where it doesn't make proper contact. Symptoms are no action from the starter or one clunk per turn of the key.
All you need to do is pull the plug off & clean it and the male spade on the solenoid. Sometimes just pulling it off and putting it back on will make for enough contact to operate the starter.
Try that before you change the starter.

I checked the battery and the battery terminals. they checked out. Checked the selenoid on the front left fender by jumping the terminals with a screw driver. No result. I tried starting the truck today and it started after a long and very slow cranking.

The guy at Midas tapped the starter with hammer and I could start the engine. I was reading the posts on starter trouble on this forum. One of the posts said that 93 Ranger has 2 selenoids , one on the fender and other on the starter.

So if i could start by tapping the starter with a hammer , what does that means. Is the selenoid on the starter fried up or is it the starter.

Thanks in advance.

If everything else checks out then go with a new starter. Sorry but I'm not familar with the 1993 starters.
