The cam is the first thing to break in. Run the engine at 2000 to 2500 rpm for about 25 minutes. Be sure to have some buddies with you to check for leaks and such. After the cam is broke in be sure to change the oil! Do not use any synthetic oils until you have atleast 500 miles on the engine. Synthetic oil will not let your rings seat properly. My did this on a motor and it never stopped burning oil. Good luck

You should be good to go after the break in. I'd change the oil again at 1,000. Keep a big fan and some water available to apply to the radiator. New engines tend to run hot and that is not a good thing.

I'd stay away from synthetics for at least 5000, not 500....thats probably what lancer meant to put in and missed a 0.

Technically you should be able to use synthetic after 500 miles. If your rings haven't seated by then they probably aren't going to. I still say run it 5,000 though. Really... what are you hurting? Nothing!

The biggest concern with synthetic oils anymore is not rings but flat tappet lifters (hydraulic or soild). I would have no problem breaking a roller engine in with synthetic oil.

Another thing to keep in mind is that oil manufacturers have somewhat recently removed zinc from their oils. This is a bad thing for cam break-in. Valvoline Racing oils still have it from what I read. Make sure and use a cam break-in additive to help out.
