hi, my 77 F150 4x4 has a 300 inliner. this engine came with no emissions save for the PCV. I know this because the decal on the valve cover reads non-catalyst. my question is if i decide to swap in a 351M will i need to put emisson devices on as well, even though the truck never had any? Also my current bellhousing will not work correct? It has a NP435 tranny. I've heard that the 302/351W will mount up, but i not interest in those engines. I used to own a 78 F150 4x4 w/ the 351M and i loved the power this engine had, though there's always room for more power. any help would be profoundly appreciated.
I would think the engine would be OK since it was offered by the factory. The bell housing is the wrong one I think. I'd go up to the 400 if I was going to do it. The weight of the vehicle determined it was "excempt" not the engine.
I have a 79 with a 351m in it (low mile great running engine) it is in front of a c6 and is bone stock
I also swaped a 351w into my 76 and it will run circles around the 351m in my 79 and parts are easy/cheap to buy for it. Granted, it does have a cam in it but this truck is a 4x4 which adds a considerable amount of weight.
thank you everyone for your replies. I just learned today a friend of mine may be buying a 75 ford F350. It has a 390 V8/4 speed that runs. He is only interest in the dump bed on it. any thoughts on the 390? I would have all of the parts necessary for the conversion from the donor truck. I would have to use the donor tranny as well, correct?
I don't know it it's a 4x4, does it matter?

Since you liked the 351M so much, why not build a 400? You can get great torque out of them from just a new intake manifold, aftermarket cam and a 4bbl carb. Nothing against the 390, I'm just a 400 fan, especially after owning a built one for a number of years now.
