OK...someone has to say this...you are truely blessed! You're going to college and are wondering if a $1500 navigation unit is a good idea for your $35K truck? Good for you!
For most of us college was a time to get very creative on how to stretch a buck...like riding on fumes so you could maximize cash on hand for essentials (beer and food).
I could never justify the need for a navigation system - hell, I rarely even look at the $5 map! I bet there's lots of folks who have this option and rarely use it, but if ya got the $$ and feel the need go for it because money does not appear to be an issue in your case. Plus...college chicks will dig it!!
In fact, it comes with a performance meter that measures Lateral G's, Acceleration, Clock, Voltage meter, speedometer and vehicle angle readout (for offroad enthusiasts). Tells you the incline/decline of the truck. BADASS!! All for less than $2K. Now, Can a laptop do that??
Yes, provided you add the accelerometer. I can also do any form of computing tasks, and play MPEG movies and MP3 audio. Did I also forget DVD/CD and real time telemetry from AutoTap? But of course you do have to add the price of the laptop, but when your in the biz, you only have to count the add ons.
I recently purchased the Magellan Roadmate 700 from Costco, $1149.99 with $50.00 rebate. Although not inexpensive or mandatory for driving, this thing is the bomb! 10 gig harddrive, no cd's, touch-screen, all of U.S. and most of Canada pre-loaded, voice direction, over 2 million points of interests, comes with windshield mount and 12v power cord...totally awesome! Worth a look if your interested. what's really cool is that it's moveable from car to car, not like an in-dash!
