Gearing

Hello, I have a 1986 Bronco XLT, 351 windsor, c-6 3speed, 33inch tires, 9" rearend, My question is this. I need help with the gearing, i dont know whats in it but its way to low, at about 60mph im at 3500rpm, this isnt going to work for me i need to be at about 2800 at 65 if possible, i guess my question is... does anyone know the best all around gear? i dont want to give up all fourwheeling but its not as important as gas mileage. Also, i cant seem to get the 4wheel drive shifter to go into 2high. Could my linkage be bent? Its never been out of the truck that i know of other than last weekend when i replaced the c-6. Anybody got any suggestions? I sure would appreciate it. I dont wanna have to trade this sucker in!

if you plan to stay with 33" tires then a 4.10 gear would put you aprox 2700 rpm at 65mph DW

you say that it won't go into 4high? is it possible then that it's stuck in 4low and you acctualy have tall gears? you need to find out for sure what gears you have before you do anything. look for the tags on your diff or if they're gone there is a trick to find out without pulling the covers. jack up the front or rear end and put the tranny in neutral. make a mark on the driveline and a tire, then spin the driveline counting the revolutions it makes for 1 tire rotation. if it's 3.5 for 1 tire rotation then you have 3.50 gears just barely over 4 rotations then it's 4.10 gears etc. then get your trans case to go in gear properly

gearing

I figured the shifting problem out, when I put in the new transmission I made the mistake of putting the 4x4 shifter on the wrong way, stupid mistake!!! but its fixed. As far as the gearing goes, that helps a lot, I will have to check that out. Wouldnt bigger tires make a different revolution though? dunno but im checking it out after work! Thanks for the info.

Tire size won't affect what gears you have in the axles, but a larger diameter tire will affect the speedometer reading. You may actually be doing 75mph with 33" tires when the speedo reads 65mph. As stated, there should be an ID tag on both axles that gives the gear ratio, like 3.50 for the Ford 9". That's what I have, and the 35" tires really throw off the speedo reading. You can correct this to some extent with a new speedometer gear. I would only swap to a 4.10 ratio for your 33's if you now have a 3.08 ratio. THe 3.50 will be O.K. for highway driving, maybe a bit underpowered for serious offroading though. My $0.02...
