Gear ratio?

I am a new member to the forum and have found a group of helpful information reading the posts here.

I am in the military stationed in Okinawa and will be ordering my 2005 F-250 through military car sales for delivery when I PCS back to the states. The salesman is said that they expect the 2005 information around the end of this month or the beginning of next. Obviously, I will not be able to test drive any trucks before ordering, so I would like to ask the help of the group. I am planning to order an F-250, 5.4, 4x4, regular cab, 6-speed and I am unsure of what gear ratio to apply to this set-up. I will not be towing anything heavy, just a 17’ Bass tracker, and use my truck primarily for a daily driver, several hunting and fishing trips a year and hauling occasional loads of lumber and sheetrock for side jobs. Which gear ratio will give me the best gas mileage / performance with the 6-speed?

get the 3.73 LS gears that will be your best mpg , but if you ever plan on bigger tires in the future you better go with the 4.10 LS

just my 2 cents

I had a 1999 F250 4x4 reg cab 5.4L 5 speed with a 4.10 LS and now I have a 2003 F250 4x2 reg cab 5.4L reg cab 5.4L 6 speed with a 3.73 LS. The 4.10 "seemed" to have more power and zip even though in 1999, the 5.4L only had 235 hp vs. 260 for my 2003. I didn't find any significant gas mileage differences between the 4.10 and the 3.73, maybe 1 or 2 mpg at the most and some of it probably has to do with the fact that the 2003 is a 4x2 rather than a 4x4. All in all, the 4.10 was the better of the two.

The 4.10 will be more sluggish off the line. Less of an issue with a standard cab though. The 4.10 is better suited to towing and larger tires if you upgrade them. The 4.10 will be a hair less gas efficient than a 3.73.

The 3.73 is very well suited to daily driving, stock sized tires, and will easily tow your boat. Probably could tow 3 of those trackers at once without issue at all.

Good Luck.

tar- I was under the impression the 4.10 would have MORE punch at the start, but less on the highway??? Am I wrong?

I believe that you have more torque (not neccesarily speed) to get the load going with a 4.10 . I think that once you are up to highway speed horsepower becomes more of the issue and that there is little difference between the two in acceleration at that point.

I had a 4.10 in my last truck and a 3.73 in my current one. I believe the 3.73 steps off the line a bit quicker with all else being equal.

Of course I can't pull as much with my 3.73.

DAMN TRADEOFFS!! HAHA

Thanks for the replies.
I think that I will go with the 4:10 since it should have better torque for getting the heavy F-250 moving and hope that it does not effect gas milage too much on the highway.
