np 435 lost 3rd gear
have new clutch kit ordered in case it's the throwout bearing.. removed cover to see if there was anything obvious - the gear I think to be 3d has sharp, even cuts in the teeth. is that correct?
son-in-law is great mechanic and all round ford man, but is in Okinawa. No help!!

The New Process 435 4 speed uses 2 nylon inserts on the 1-2 shift fork, 2 more on the 3-4 shift fork.
These are notorious for breaking apart, falling into the transmission where, in some cases, they can jam up the gears.
The transmission will not shift if these inserts are missing.
You need to remove the shift lever (when it's in neutral), then remove the top cover of the trans (shift lever tower) to access these shift forks.
The cap that retains the shift lever to the tower has two notches in it...and to remove it, it must be pressed down, then turned a 1/4 turn.
Peeps don't know this, and try and turn the cap without pressing it down, which tears the notches out, rendering it unusable.
All these parts are still available from Ford.
