I've got a 1985 F150 with 5.0 liter engine, EFI. When I disconnect the battery to remove codes, what process do I go through to get the computer to set the correct idle speed? I once knew, but have forgotten.
Well I never heard of disconnecting the battery to get the codes....you need the battery. I think when you disconnected the battery and then use a code device to flash the codes, you just resetted the computer, and it won't have any codes then....Now you have to run it for about 10 miles to check for the codes afterwares keep the battery connected, unless you want to dump the codes (clear the memory) on the computer.
And I might add you don't adjust the "carb" on an EFI engine....the thottle position sensor does it for you (hint... computer controlled air an fuel mixture).
locknkey...not to step on your toes or anything, but he didn't say anything about adjusting a carb...he wanted to know the process to get the computer to set the correct idle speed...
I just want to get rid of codes and start over. And when you disconnect the battery the idle needs to be relearned. I remember Ford Mechanic telling me long ago, but forgot. Something like run at 2000 rpms for so many minutes. Anybody remember?
I think what locknkey was trying to say is the idle speed on EFI engines are automatically adjusted. There should be no need to adjust the idle speed manually.
After battery disconnect....hot engine, idle in park for two minutes, idle in drive for two minutes, park with air on for two minutes, in drive with air on for two minutes, and then drive the vehicle for 10 miles....It's known as Adaptive Strategy Relearn.
