Exclamation timing=power..

I had alot more power from my 351M before I took it to the smog shop. It passed, but they have set my timing to 10 degrees btdc. I have no idea what it was set at before, but I was wondering what you guys have set it at in the past. She also runs rough right at 2000 rpm, as well as idle. anywhere else, it sounds smooth. suggestions (especially proven ones) are really appreciated. Thanks!

Ball,
Get a timing light and (T&E), Trial and Error, it. Simply advance your timing 2 degrees at a time. Drive it for a day.
If it pings, you've gone too far.
If it starts slow when hot, you've advanced it too far.
If it runs hot, you've advanced too far.
If the idle picks up too much, retune the carb to get the idle you want.
Its that simple.

Thanks dfish. I just put a muffler and 3" catback on at lunch this afternoon, and I have to say she runs maybe a little worse now. I was at a stop sign, and I gave it gas to get going, and she spit, hesitated and then went. Im not sure if that is timing, or carbeurator prob...?? Any ideas? on where to start for that?thanks

Hesitation at takeoff could very well be your carburetor. When was the last time you rebuilt it? But you still need to adjust your timing from the sounds of it.

I'd rebuild the carb, if you haven't already, and then adjust your timing along with the carb.

My Carb was rebuilt two years ago, and I just tuned it up, new plugs, cap, wires, rotor, filter, and an accel super stock coil. I had a neighbor help me reset the timing cause a shop tried to rip me off telling me I needed the carb rebuilt again. Now we couldnt see where it is set now, but, it runs alot better, except for when I'm pulling. I pulled a twelve k boat with it a month ago, and going up medium grade hills, I was having to downshift from third to second cause of the valves, I'd hear em chattering away feverishly.. dunno why. It was unlike anything in the past.. With only 125k on the original motor, 4 wheel drive, and 3.56 gears, I hadnt ever had a prob outpulling anyone in the past. ( I know 3.56 isd high, but the NP205 has to have serious given me some gear reduction.) So either She will run like crap, or she'll run good, but pull like crap.. I give up... Building a 400 as soon an these CA smog laws let me in three years.

Hmmmm... increasing the displacement to 400 should not have any real effect on the tailpipe sniffer as long as long you leave the cam, carb, and smog devices as they are. And you can't tell by looking at it....

Well, when I rebuild it, there really is a big list including a different cam, that will be changed out in the truck., I figure I'll do it all at once and just use all my leave during that period, rather than looking for a ride everywhere trying to get to work on time.
