Fire Rooster-
I'm looking at air bags for my truck and would like some more information on it. I like your setup with the controls in the cab. Where did you get that setup and how much did it cost you? My truck sits a little low on the left side looking from the back and I am hoping air bags could help level it as well as assist in towing as you have described earlier. Any information you have would be great.
Thanks!
I had the relief springs replaced on mine and now the truck could be rated at a 450. If you have a 350, you don't need the clips for the springs. A 250, just a couple of dollars more. The air bags are great for a time but the reason I pulled up from them was that eventually something will leak or quit. Quick fix vs. durability. I wanted something I didn't have to worry about. The relief springs don't come into play until a load is placed on them. A WDH would solve a sagging a.... truck! No airbags, no relief springs! I have one on the wife's 150 and there is no sag pulling those two meatheads of hers. Sorry, I'll be quiet now.
DD, Don't know if you are interested in getting a new trailer, but I'd recommend getting a goose neck, will pull even easier and are a lot easier to back up.
Farmboy, check your email, I will send you a document that someone did on setting up for Air horns, wouldn't take much to adapt it for air bags. A lot of well though Ideas there.
Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. I have gone for a couple of days. Any way there are two companies that make the air bags you,ll want. Firestone and air lift. Any way you can order them direct from each company and or have them ordered and installed at any hitch works or quality bumper or any other store of this nature. The cost is about 4 to 5 hundred installed that is with the on board compressor and in cab controls. Mine do not leak as some one stated before. The key is you have to keep a min of 5 psi in them. And that is what makes the air ride any way. The onboard compressor and gauges take all the guess work out of it. It is right there in plain view all the time and you can control individual sides for different pressures hence fixing the lean in your truck. look up air springs or air lift on the web and it will take you directly to the sites you need. I tell ya I love mine and so does my wife!!! Also an added benefit is it is less stress on your traier when you go over bumps and rough roads. Let me know how it goes.
Get the bags with the in-cab fill kit. I pull trailers commercially w/ my '96 F350DRW. If I don't put 30psi or more in the bags for any trailer over 23ft/6k GVW, I get lots of front-end bounce, even with the equalizer bars installed. When I hook up a trailer, I'll fill the bags just enough to lift the front end of the helper leaf off the front spring stop; levels out the truck perfectly & gives me a relatively jolt-free ride. I do have one aftermarket mod besides the air bags; I replaced the rear spring shackles with VelvetRide shackles to soften the empty ride. Works like a charm when I'm bobtailing.
Thanks for the replys, that helps me a lot. I'll have to start calling around and see what's in my area. Sounds like the air bags should solve my problem and also help in a better ride.
Thanks!
DaBigTow, checked out the velvet ride shackles, look pretty interesting, I have found them at drivetrain.com, do you know of any other sites that might carry them?
