I have a 94 4L explorer it has about 100,000 miles on it the thing has a bad ping. I have taken it to the dealer thay cant fine anything wrong, thay did run engine cleaner through it a couple of times. I have checked engine codes and nothing comes up. anybody have any ideas? this is getting frusterating. Thanks Dan
Carbon buildup is one common cause of ping on the 4.0 OHV. So cleaning the engine was a good 1st try.
There are a couple other common causes. They are different causes for the engine to run a little lean.
1) A dirty MAF. Easy to clean, just be careful not to damage the filaments.
2) Vacuum/air intake leak. An interesting vacuum leak that is common the 4.0 is through the lower intake manifold gasket. Over time, the bolts come loose and allow a slight intake leak (can also allow a coolant leak or oil leak into the cylinders often associated with #5 cylinder). Most of the time, tightening the bolts will cure the problem. Occasionally, the gasket is so far gone, it needs to be replaced.
I had the same problem in my 94 ex, It turned out to be the Mass Airflow sensor. The computer didnt show any codes when this happened. Somehow the shop tested the sensor and found it to be bad. They replaced the sensor and it ran good as new !
Check the vacuum lines, especially the one on the fuel pressure regulator. If its not getting vacuum it will make the engine go lean and knock. Mine was doing it really bad and thats what I found. Also, if your vacuum lines are oily inside replace your vacuum modulator on the transmission.
Thought mine had a very bad spark knock. Turned out the oil pump was going, the noise being the lifters. With the dummy oil guage I couldn't tell until it was below 5psi and the damage was done. It was a year of fighting spark knock when that wasn't the problem.

"mrshorty" has the answer, if you are using some oil. That intake gasket can suck down a quart in 1000 to 1500 miles without a hint of smoke. If this condition exists and a tank of premium fuel doesn't help, then it is most likely the intake gasket.
