I'm half tempted just to run purple hornies right off the back of my headers. I've heard that is where flowmaster aimed for sound with their 2 chambers.
i bought my flowtech purple hornies from jegs for i think 24.99 a piece and they bolt right up to my 3 in header collectors, ill let you know how they sound when i fire her up for the first time friday. if they sound great with no exhaust pipe hooked to the back of them i think ill just run them bolted to my headers.
I ran Thrush Hush muffs behind my headers(same stye as Hornies) they were on a 500 HP Chebby....and those things would run ya right out of the cab!! and when they blew out in 3 months... a 200 watt amp could barely be heard coming out of the stereo! LOL! And Sean your truck sounds sweet as it is!! - Russ
I ran without that cross-member for a while in the 390 powered 69. I simply forgot to put it back in when I was replacing the transmission after a rebuild. Once I realized what I had done, I could not get tha darn cross-member back in place. The only thing I noticed was that I needed to re-torque the bolts on the control arm mounts every so often to keep things tight. But, mine were also getting lubricated frequently :-) I think you can get away without it on a street truck. You may see some frame flex on launch. I'm sure you could use a smaller more accomodating strut that could easily be fabricated.
Randy, modify the crossmember and then put it back please. It doesn't have to be heavy to do its job. The reasons it is shaped the way it is is for strength without a lot of weight. But you DO need it. The reason Gtex had a tough time getting his back in after he forgot it for a while was that his frame was bending. You probably can't see the bend just looking. That cross member is there to keep the frame rails from bending in towards each other any time the front tires hit a bump. and then there is the weight of the cab trying to push the rails around. Back when I was in high school ( don't ask when that was, but you could still buy a new FE then ) my auto shop teached claimed that a car manufacturer would make a change in design of the car if they could save 1 tenth of 1 cent on manufacturing costs. Do you really think ford would have put it there if you didn't need it ? What do you want your frame rails to look like after a year or so....>< or == ? DF
Yes, I will fab a crossmember that will clear my 3" pipes. I know that brace was for controlling flex. I just didn't think it was enough to bend the frame. Maybe enough to notice on the road.
It doesn't weigh enough to worry about. I am trying to lose as much wait as possible also.
