hey i got a 99 psd. i took a 400 mile round trip to tampa this past weekend. before i left i checked the oil and it was in the middle of the x's on the dip stick. wheni got back i checked it and it was well below the x's. i had to add 2 quarts to get it about the bottom of the line. im not sure how long i was low on oil but is it really bad to drive around when your low on oil? i dont think i was long for long but doyou think it did any damage to my engine? i heard that if you drive at high speed for a while it will burn oil. most of the trip i was doing about 80-90 mph so im guess thats how it was burned cause ive had it for a few months and ive just drove it aound town and ive never noticed any oil burning at all so this is new to me.
You can't hurt a Power Stroke by running it low on oil. When it gets low enough it will quit delivering oil to the H/P pump reservoir and it will die -- it won't run without oil. Don't worry about it.
It shouldn't really make that much difference how you drive it -- it shouldn't be using that much oil. How many miles are on the truck? Has the warranty expired? If you still have warranty left you need to take it to Ford and get it on record that an oil consumption problem exists. We had some problems with cylinder bore finish in 2000 but I think your engine predates that problem. Your injector O-rings may be starting to crap out on you and leak H/P oil into the fuel.
i got a 99 f-250 with 73,000 miles on it. ive had it 3 months and i check the oil level everyweek and have never noticed any oil burning untill now. what should i do? is it a big problem with my truck buring oil?
As far as I know your truck engine has a 100,000 mile warranty but I don't know what the time frame is. The oil usage won't hurt anything unless your injector O-rings are crapping out. Eventually one will give way and you won't be able to generate enough injection pressure to start.
